I remember my first crystal bowl sound healing bath like it was yesterday. (sigh!) I was driving to a yoga retreat with my sister in upstate New York in a pretty heavy snow storm. Super stressed driving and white knuckling it all the way, it wasn’t snowing when we left New Jersey! Needless to say I was very relieved when we made it there safely. Our first event upon check in was a crystal bowl sound bath. Thank goodness!
I had never experienced a sound bath before, I wasn’t sure what it was or what to expect. I figured it was a good way to lay in savasana (resting pose) and destress. Here’s what happened next…
The first sound of the biggest crystal bowl rang through me. Followed by, higher sounds and frequencies from smaller crystal bowls, vibrating through my body. Sometimes a chime would ring, an ocean drum would roll, it was literally music to my ears and it put me in a state of deep meditation and relaxation.
This month’s blog will explain what sound bath healing is, specifically Crystal sound bowl healing, since that is what I use most often and the benefits of a sound bowl healing.
Sound healing is an ancient healing technique, using tonal frequencies to bring your body into a state of vibrational balance and harmony allowing you to relax, reset by letting go of stress and heal from any harboring emotional baggage.
Everything on this planet is made up of energy, therefore everything has a vibrational frequency, including ourselves. Sound frequencies impact how we feel. Ever hear a song on the radio that brings on the water works? How about a song that immediately puts a smile on your face? It’s these sound frequencies in particular songs and types of music often bring about specific types of emotions from us.
Crystal sound bowls come in a variety of sizes. Usually a set of 7 but you can have more or less. The bigger the bowl, the deeper the ring. The smaller the bowl, the higher the ring. In chakra energy, it’s said that crystal singing bowls align with each of the chakras, seven in total. Each sound of the crystal bowl has a frequency that resonates with a specific chakra. Hence the 7 crystal bowls for the seven chakras.
There are other instruments that can be used in a sound bath healing, such as Tibetan singing bowls usually made of metal typically bronze, gongs, tuning forks, chimes, ocean drums and other drums are the instruments that practitioners most often use in sessions.
During a crystal bowl sound healing, there’s nothing to do but relax. Typically you’ll lie down on the floor with a yoga mat, maybe cuddle up with a cozy blanket, close your eyes and simply listen as a practitioner plays a variety of instruments and you “bathe” in the soothing sounds and vibrations.
The sound waves and frequencies allow the brain to slow down and coax it into a restorative state, which activates the body’s system of self-healing.
Yes! Crystal sound bowl healing is for everyone. There is no age limit, my teenage daugher loves it! There is no strenuous activity. If you feel you struggle with sitting still in a meditation a sound bath is different in that it provides a meditative state but the different sounds keep you present when your mind begins to wander. Crystal sound bowl healing is for you if you have a high paced life, have a lot of stress, take care of a lot of loved ones, have trouble focusing, need more time to unplug, this is a beautiful way to start.
